Tony and Jan – Making New Memories on “The Boat”

Some brief info about us: We are Tony (born in Leicester) and Jan (born in Wales) and had careers in showbusiness – Tony a musician and musical director, and Jan a singer & dancer. We met in summer season at Skegness which is a seaside resort on the east coast in England.

We settled down in rural Norfolk and raised a family of two girls – Siân and Molly.

After switching careers to Television, Tony worked for ITV and then took a contract to work in India. Whilst working for ITV he made programmes in far flung countries – America, Vienna, France and found himself in a nuclear submarine at sea for 6 days filming a series on the centenary of the British submarine.

Meanwhile, Jan worked for a event producer as a PA before moving to a local farm supplying supermarkets with produce.

The girls have now moved on, having made loads of family memories and we have now retired from the World of work and looking at Making New Memories as we travel the British waterways.

And the love of narrowboating?

Well, that all started back in 1998 with a weekend hire from Rugby (from Viking Afloat). We fell in love immediately despite having difficulty winding a 70′ narrowboat! But we learnt quickly and wanted to go out again and did so on numerous occasions all the way up to the time we decided we wanted our own boat but due to work commitments and children’s holidays, buying outright might be a problem. So, after some research we decided to buy a share in a boat.

We found the perfect share in a boat called Sapphire and we fell in love with her as soon as we stepped aboard when we went for a viewing. Our share meant we had first choice on school holidays and then could pick weekends thereafter. There were 12 of us in total who all looked after her. She was initially moored at Fradley, then Aynho on the Oxford Canal and then moved to Streethay Wharf. We sold our share when we no longer used our time due to work commitments. But that didn’t stop us having holidays and our last holiday was in 2017 from Bunbury.

Over the years we’ve made countless memories, which are now all stored safely in our minds. In the next chapter in our lives, we will be making new memories (hence the name) and very much looking forward to it – we hope you stick around with us!

We had another mid-week family break in October 2020 with all 6 of us onboard – it was fun and full of autumnal colours. You can catch it on our YouTube channel.

Now, we’ve moved onto our boat, laughingly called, THE BOAT and starting to MAKE NEW MEMORIES!
