Q: Who is behind Making New Memories?
A: We’re Tony and Jan. Take a look at our “About Us” page and you’ll learn a little more about us…
Q: Why did you decide now is the right time to sell up and live aboard a narrowboat?
A: Our two girls have grown up, have both left the family home and setting up their own lives. Plus we’re not getting any younger(!) and have always loved the British waterways.
Q: How did your love of the waterways start?
A: From 1998 when we randomly decided to take a short break. Tony had been reading a Sunday supplement which mentioned holidays on the British canals and after making a few enquiries we had booked our first weekend away. We hired from Viking Afloat, and as it was out of season they “upgraded” us to a 70 footer!! Quiet a feet for our first venture on the canal…
Q: And what happened after that?
A: As soon as the girls were old enough, in 2001, we took them on their first adventure. We went from Weedon down towards Milton Keynes on the Grand Union canal, taking in Blisworth Tunnel along the way. We had lots of other annual trips on the canal.
Q: Why did you buy a “shared” ownership boat?
A: We thought it was the best way to actually own a boat without having it sit there when we weren’t using it. Shared ownership is a great way to find out if you want to eventually own your own boat as you’re still responsible for all the maintenance and the annual payments. But the beauty is that the costs are split between the owners – usually around 12 of you. You get to pick when you can have your holidays (those with families usually pay a small premium to get school holidays) and after you’ve all chosen your main weeks, you then go in reverse order and pick which remaining weekends you might like. The other advantage is that you aren’t stuck to a particular canal or waterway as you can arrange with the next owner where to leave the boat. And then every year you can decide which marina the boat is moored in so you get to see a lot of the network. Shared ownership of a narrowboat is something we talk about in one of our vlogs HERE
Q: What are your plans now?
A: Well, we’ve sold our home – to one of our daughters and her fiancé and are now aboard our boat, called The Boat!
We’ve now started our continuous journey along the canals and rivers! We hope that you decide to stick with us and follow us and be part of our journey. You can keep up-to-date with our plans, by watching our YouTube vlogs, or reading our Diary Page
